Pilgrim Primary Academy, Reach South Academy Trust is seeking to appoint a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join the School

Post: HLTA for KS1

Location: Pilgrim Primary Academy, Oxford Street, Plymouth, PL1 5BQ

Salary Range: Grade E 15-20 (FTE £30,024-£32,597) per annum pro-rata

Actual Salary: £21,663 - £23,520

Contract: Permanent Term-time (39 weeks year)

Hours: 30 hours a week

Start Date: 3rd September 2026

The Role: We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced HLTA to join our team of exceptional practitioners in KS1. The HLTA role will involve supporting the phase leader in the planning and delivery of academic interventions. It will also involve providing class cover for ECT and subject leaders release time. The role will also involve leading and supporting Teaching Assistants in KS1.

An excellent grasp of the KS1 curriculum, behaviour management and SEND best practice is required. A good knowledge and understanding of phonics and Read Write Inc would also be advantageous. We are looking for someone who as undertaken HLTA training alternatively, this could be an ideal position for a qualified teacher who wants to broaden their range of experience or step out of the classroom teachers position.

Main purpose of job

To provide whole class cover for teachers in KS1 on a set timetable to enable subject release time, ECT time, Leadership release and subject monitoring to take place.

Responsible for the planning and delivery of interventions within KS1, supporting the phase leader to raise standards. Supporting and leading the teaching assistants across the team.

Specific duties


Provide, prepare and deliver activities and lessons to groups and whole classes of pupils, evaluate and adjust lessons/work plans as appropriate


Deliver local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, early years


Select and prepare resources necessary to deliver the planned curriculum


Monitor and evaluate pupil’s responses to learning activities through a range of assessment and monitoring strategies against learning intentions, providing feedback to pupils.


Assess, mark, record and report on development, progress and attainment in line with the school’s monitoring cycle


Manage the learning environment in the lessons they teach


Establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations working within our established positive behaviour policy


Promote inclusion of all pupils within the classroom, recognising and responding to all special and individual needs


When not required to cover whole classes, to lead learning interventions for small groups, pairs or individuals and to provide pastoral support where required through school.
