Job description

Education Welfare Officer

Attendance, Welfare and Family Support

Telford Park School

Help Every Child Achieve, Belong and Thrive

At Telford Park School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to achieve academically, belong within our community and thrive as an individual. Excellent attendance is fundamental to this vision.

We are seeking a passionate, resilient and highly organised Education Welfare Officer to join our ambitious team. This is an exciting opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people and their families by helping pupils overcome barriers to attendance, engagement and success.

Working alongside our Attendance Champion, safeguarding team, pastoral leaders and external agencies, you will play a pivotal role in improving attendance, strengthening family engagement and ensuring that vulnerable pupils receive the support they need to attend school regularly and flourish.

The Role

You will lead on attendance casework, family liaison and targeted intervention for pupils whose attendance is causing concern, particularly those at risk of persistent or severe absence.

You will:

  • Identify attendance concerns early and coordinate effective support.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with pupils and families.
  • Conduct attendance meetings and home visits where appropriate.
  • Work closely with safeguarding, SEND and pastoral teams to remove barriers to attendance.
  • Support pupils experiencing anxiety, social difficulties, safeguarding concerns or other vulnerabilities.
  • Coordinate attendance plans, reintegration support and multi-agency interventions.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to attendance reviews and reports.
  • Work with external agencies and the local authority where additional support or escalation is required.

This is a role for someone who understands that attendance is not simply an administrative issue. It is often a safeguarding, welfare and inclusion issue that requires persistence, compassion and professional challenge.

What We Are Looking For

We would love to hear from candidates who have:

  • Experience working with children, young people and families.
  • Experience within education, pastoral care, safeguarding, family support, youth work, social care or a related field.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to work positively with families while maintaining high expectations.
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and the challenges faced by vulnerable children and families.
  • The ability to remain calm, professional and solution-focused when managing complex situations.

Experience of attendance casework, education welfare work, Early Help processes or multi-agency working would be highly desirable.
