English and Intervention Teacher

King James's School · Huddersfield · Kirklees

Job description

The role - a different way to make a difference

Are you an experienced English teacher who enjoys helping pupils overcome barriers and achieve their potential? Are you a skilled intervention practitioner who thrives on delivering focused, high-impact teaching? Or perhaps you are an enthusiastic Early Career Teacher looking to begin your career in a supportive and ambitious English department?

We are seeking to appoint a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and committed individual to join our English team. We are particularly interested in appointing an experienced English Intervention Specialist who can deliver effective, targeted teaching and make a measurable difference to pupils' progress. We welcome applications from qualified teachers, but will also consider experienced practitioners who can demonstrate a strong track record of delivering successful English interventions.

We are equally keen to hear from promising Early Career Teachers who have the subject knowledge, enthusiasm and potential to make a valuable contribution to our department.

This role offers the opportunity to focus your expertise where it can have a significant impact: working closely with pupils, building their confidence and helping them achieve success. It is a role that offers the opportunity to develop professionally within a supportive department committed to excellent teaching and learning.

The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a department that is passionate about developing confident readers, effective writers and articulate young people.

For an intervention specialist, the role will primarily involve teaching small groups of pupils across Key Stages 4, providing focused support to address gaps in knowledge, strengthen literacy skills and improve confidence and achievement at GCSE level.

Working closely with the English team, you will plan and deliver purposeful intervention, monitor pupil progress and adapt your approach to ensure that support is responsive and effective. There may also be opportunities to provide a small amount of classroom teaching where appropriate.

For an Early Career Teacher, the role offers the opportunity to develop classroom practice, deliver an engaging and ambitious English curriculum and benefit from the support and expertise of experienced colleagues.

The precise nature of the appointment will reflect the qualifications, experience and strengths of the successful candidate.

Us

Our English department is committed to providing a rich, challenging and engaging curriculum, underpinned by high expectations, thoughtful teaching and a shared ambition for every pupil.

At King James’s School, we are ambitious for the very best outcomes for every one of our students, and we believe that education is more than just examinations and lessons. Our school focuses on providing a holistic experience that inspires curiosity, builds confidence and character in our young people and prepares them for their future by giving them strong foundations and happy memories.

We are a community-focused school built on respect, inclusion and the belief in valuing and developing people. We had a highly successful Ofsted in 2025 that highlighted we are a very good school that should now strive to be a great school, that is our ambition in all senses. This is an opportunity to be part of our school.

You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has excellent subject knowledge and a genuine passion for English.
  • Believes that every pupil can succeed with high expectations and effective support.
  • Can build positive relationships and inspire confidence in learners.
  • Understands how to identify gaps in knowledge and deliver teaching that addresses them.
  • Can adapt their approach to support pupils with a range of starting points and learning needs.
  • Is committed to improving standards of reading, writing and communication.
  • Values teamwork, professional reflection and continuous improvement.
  • Brings enthusiasm, creativity and a determination to make a difference.

Qualified teacher status is desirable for this position, although applications from experienced, successful English intervention practitioners without QTS will be considered.

Safeguarding

All applicants will be required to provide two references, which will be obtained prior to interview. As part of our safer recruitment processes, online searches will also be carried out on shortlisted candidates.

The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This role involves direct contact with children and is therefore classified as regulated activity. In line with this, the post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and candidates are required to disclose any relevant criminal convictions.
