About the Role

The Head of Year is a key pastoral leader within the school, responsible for ensuring that every student in their year group is known, supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.

Working closely with students, families, tutors, teachers and external agencies, you will lead on attendance, behaviour, safeguarding, wellbeing and student achievement, ensuring that barriers to success are identified and addressed swiftly and effectively.

You will champion high standards and a strong culture of belonging, helping students to develop the character, confidence and resilience needed to thrive both academically and personally.

Alongside your year group responsibilities, you will play an active role in supporting the day-to-day operation of the school. This includes contributing to student supervision, supporting behaviour systems, providing short-term lesson cover where required, supervising the removal room, responding to on-call requests and undertaking other operational duties that help maintain a calm, purposeful and productive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Pastoral Leadership

  • Lead the pastoral provision for a designated year group.
  • Promote high standards of attendance, punctuality, behaviour, conduct and uniform.
  • Build strong relationships with students and families to support student success.
  • Ensure students feel safe, supported and able to engage fully in school life.
  • Support safeguarding processes and work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Team where required.
  • Coordinate interventions for vulnerable students and those facing barriers to learning.
  • Work collaboratively with external agencies and professionals to secure positive outcomes for students.

Attendance, Behaviour and Achievement3

  • Monitor attendance, punctuality and behaviour, identifying concerns and implementing effective interventions.
  • Analyse student data to identify trends and target support appropriately.
  • Work with students, families and staff to improve attendance and engagement.
  • Support students to overcome barriers to achievement and maximise academic progress.
  • Contribute to strategies that improve outcomes and aspirations across the year group.

Leading the Year Team

  • Lead and support tutors within the year group.
  • Develop a strong year group identity and culture.
  • Monitor and quality assure the tutor programme.
  • Support tutors in delivering effective pastoral support and high-quality tutor time.
  • Lead year team meetings and contribute to whole-school pastoral development.

Wider School Contribution

  • Support the smooth day-to-day operation of the school.
  • Provide short-term lesson cover, registration supervision, interventions and invigilation where required.
  • Supervise students during social times and transitions throughout the school day.
  • Support the school's behaviour systems, including supervising the removal room and responding to on-call requests.
  • Undertake duties that contribute to maintaining a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment.

  • Is willing to undertake training and professional development opportunities, including first aid training.
  • Is flexible and willing to contribute to the wider life and operational needs of a busy secondary school.
