Inclusion Worker

At Ferndale Primary and Nursery School, we believe that every child deserves to belong, to be heard and to have someone in their corner. We know that children learn best when they feel safe, secure and understood - and we also know that sometimes supporting a child means supporting the whole family and team around them.

We are looking for a warm, compassionate, resilient and highly motivated Inclusion Worker to join our Ferndale team. This is a hugely rewarding role for someone who wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of children and families every single day.

No two days will be the same.

You might start your morning welcoming a child who is finding coming into school difficult, spend time supporting a parent who needs someone to listen and help them find the right support, work alongside a child to help them understand and regulate their emotions, or support a pupil within the classroom so that they can successfully access their learning. You may work with colleagues to develop a behaviour or support plan, attend a meeting with a family and other professionals, make an onward referral for additional help, or advocate for a child whose voice needs to be heard. These responsibilities reflect the direct family work, curriculum access, behaviour intervention, Early Help and multi-agency elements of the role.

Safeguarding sits at the heart of this role. The successful candidate will be an important member of our safeguarding team and will operate as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead. You will need to be someone children and adults can trust; someone who can listen carefully, remain calm when situations are difficult, exercise professional curiosity and, above all, never lose sight of what is best for the child.

Relationships will be central to everything you do. We are looking for somebody who can build positive and respectful relationships with our parents and carers, including families who may be experiencing challenging circumstances. You will be an important link between home and school, working with families rather than simply doing things for them, helping them access support and ensuring they remain fully involved in decisions concerning their children.

In school, you will work closely with teachers, teaching assistants and our wider team to help remove the barriers that can prevent children from flourishing. This could include supporting behaviour, social and emotional needs, self-esteem, regulation, reintegration or simply helping a child successfully participate in classroom life.

You will need kindness and empathy, but also confidence and professional challenge. You will need to be approachable, but able to maintain clear boundaries. You will need to be organised, able to manage sensitive information appropriately and comfortable working with a range of professionals.

Most importantly, you will need to believe passionately that every child can flourish when we understand the need behind the behaviour and work together to remove the barriers in their way.
