Kitchen Assistant (Classroom Based)

The University of Birmingham School · Birmingham · Birmingham

Job description

We are looking to appoint a proactive and organised Kitchen Assistant to support our Food Technology & Nutrition lessons and play a key role in supporting pupils with their learning. This is an excellent opportunity for someone keen to work with young people in a busy school environment, whilst demonstrating a strong commitment to high standards of organisation, hygiene and safety.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working closely with pupils to provide support in practical lessons, demonstrations, displays and assessments
  • Preparation of ingredients, equipment and resources for practical food lessons to ensure teaching runs efficiently
  • Maintaining high standards of health & safety, food hygiene, allergen management, cleaning schedules, equipment checks and safe storage
  • Stock control, ordering, delivery checks and the management of consumables

We are looking for someone highly organised and reliable, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a busy environment. The successful candidate will have an understanding of food hygiene and safe kitchen practices, be able to work independently using their own initiative, and will take pride in maintaining a clean, safe and well-organised working environment. Previous experience in a school technician role, catering environment or food preparation setting would be desirable, along with a food hygiene certificate, although training can be provided. Experience of working with young people or within an educational setting would also be advantageous.

The post is for 16 hours per week over 4 days, term time only.

We will have high expectations of you to be an outstanding role model committed to the distinctive ethos of our School, where we strive for academic excellence, underpinned by character education. In return we can offer you:

  • A commitment to your continued professional development within school, using additional training days to enhance and develop your knowledge and skills.
  • Involvement in our exciting timetabled enrichment programme.
  • Access to world class resources, research and people through our partnership with the University of Birmingham.

The successful candidate will be subject to all necessary pre-employment checks including: enhanced DBS; Prohibition Check; qualifications; medical fitness; identity and right to work.

All applicants will be required to provide two suitable references. If you are currently working in a school setting, please ensure that your references include your current Head Teacher.
