Learning Support Assistant

Sir Thomas Fremantle School · Winslow · Buckinghamshire

Job description

Sir Thomas Fremantle School is seeking a dedicated, compassionate and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant to join our supportive and inclusive team. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of young people and helping them to achieve their full potential.
About Us

Sir Thomas Fremantle School is an ambitious 11-16 secondary school at the heart of a close-knit community in North Buckinghamshire. With around 700 students, we pride ourselves on knowing each individual well and nurturing a strong sense of belonging. Our modern, purpose-built site opened in 2017 and offers excellent facilities to support high-quality teaching and learning.
Our mission is simple: to provide every student with an outstanding education that inspires and equips them for their next steps. We know that exceptional schools are built on exceptional staff, which is why we place professional development and wellbeing at the centre of what we do. Staff benefit from high-quality training, opportunities to innovate, and a supportive culture that encourages reflective practice and growth.
The Role
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will play a key role in helping students overcome barriers to learning by providing tailored support both in and out of the classroom. Working closely with teaching staff and the SEND team, you will help create an environment where students feel valued, encouraged and empowered to succeed.

You will:

  • Support students with a range of additional needs to access learning and make progress across the curriculum
  • Work alongside teachers to adapt learning and provide targeted support within lessons
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with students, helping to develop confidence, independence and resilience
  • Take responsibility for a group of key students, monitoring both their academic progress and wellbeing
  • Maintain regular communication with parents and carers to support student success
  • Conduct lesson observations and contribute to the evaluation of student engagement and progress
  • Track academic performance and support the implementation of appropriate interventions
  • Carry out regular pastoral check-ins and wellbeing support
  • Help ensure students attend and engage fully with interventions tailored to their individual needs
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive and nurturing school environment

What We're Looking For
We are keen to hear from candidates who:

  • Are passionate about supporting young people and helping them thrive
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Can build positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues
  • Are patient, empathetic and resilient
  • Are organised and able to manage competing priorities effectively
  • Work well as part of a team and are committed to continuous professional development
  • Share our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people

Experience of working with children or young people is desirable, but we welcome applications from individuals with transferable skills and a genuine enthusiasm for supporting students.
Professional Development

At Sir Thomas Fremantle School, we are committed to investing in our staff. We are particularly keen to support colleagues in developing specialist areas of expertise and would welcome applications from candidates with an interest in areas such as:

  • ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support)
  • Speech, Language and Communication
  • Autism and neurodiversity
  • Literacy intervention
  • Subject-specific support and development

Previous experience in these areas is not essential. What matters most is your willingness to learn, develop and make a positive impact on the lives of young people.

Why Join STFS?

  • A warm, inclusive and ambitious school community
  • A highly supportive SEND team
  • Purpose-built facilities and excellent resources
  • High-quality professional development and training opportunities
  • Opportunities to develop specialist expertise and progress your career
  • A school culture built on care, collaboration and high expectations
