School Librarian

The Swan School · Oxford · Oxfordshire

Job description

We are seeking a structured and ambitious professional to manage and develop our school library as a center of educational excellence. At The Swan School, we have established a calm, disciplined environment where exemplary student behavior is maintained through consistently applied, centralised systems. This role provides true professional agency to lead on reading interventions, curate a high-quality curriculum stock, and coordinate whole-school literacy events that support our structured academic ethos.

Why This Role Matters

As our School Librarian, you are not simply maintaining book stock; you are the architect of independent learning habits for over 1,200 students. You will manage computerised assets, administer the departmental budget, and lead a team of pupil librarians to ensure the facility serves as an essential tool for daily curriculum delivery. By collaborating directly with the Head of English and Literacy, your work will directly reduce barriers to learning through structured reading groups and targeted interventions.

What You’ll Bring
  • Qualifications: Educated to degree level or higher, or equivalent professional librarianship qualification / significant relevant experience.

  • Experience: A proven track record of managing library practices and procedures, preferably within a secondary school setting.

  • Intervention Skills: The confidence and skill to lead small group reading interventions and targeted literacy programmes.

  • Operational Capability: Strong ICT literacy with experience maintaining computerised cataloguing, book ledgers, and budget records.

  • Mindset: A fundamental belief that all children can achieve great things, combined with the capacity to work calmly under pressure.

Quote from our current Librarian:

“The Swan School Library sits at the centre of our academic life. Swan students know that reading isn't just an optional hobby that some people enjoy, it is for everyone; the promotion of reading is built into the fabric of our daily routine, from lessons to tutor time to electives to independent study, supporting our students' development in every way."

The RLT Connection

Education has the power to change lives; we are better, faster, stronger together. The Swan School is a member of the River Learning Trust (RLT), a stable and mission-driven multi-academy trust. Joining us provides access to shared security and regional expertise:

  • Shared Growth: Access to Trust-wide professional networks and structural funding pathways for role-specific qualifications and apprenticeships.

  • The Whole Person: A comprehensive 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme, access to regional occupational health support, and a genuine commitment to balanced workloads.

River Learning Trust and The Swan School are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and preventing extremism. We are an exempt employer under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

We actively value the "different contributions" you can make. We want you to be at your best during the application process; if you require any reasonable adjustments, please let us know.
