Design and Technology at Newton Abbot College

The Department team

The successful applicant will join an ambitious team that currently consists of two full time teachers, and one part-time teacher. The team strives for excellence in all areas and constantly seek to look for ways to develop our approaches and curriculum to ensure our students do they very best they can.

All members of the team actively contribute towards the development of the department and regular formal and informal meetings ensure that standards of teaching and learning reflect the aims of the college.

The department has four teaching rooms that are fitted with digital projectors, visualisers and timers, as well as specialist equipment for delivering Food & Nutrition and Design & Technology lessons. In our two custom D&T workshops students have access to computers, laser cutters and other specialist equipment to enable them to work with plastics, wood and metal.

Approach

The Design and Technology department at Newton Abbot College are a passionate and dedicated team who are determined to provide our students with a powerful education which equips students with the skills they need for their future endeavours. The team have built a curriculum that is innovative, engaging and that builds the essential skills and knowledge that learners need. Above all though, the main goal is to raise student achievement, and we do this through a consistent approach to teaching and learning using the NAC Lesson Framework of Excellence, responsive teaching, and expecting excellence from our students.

Within the classroom the college aspires to promote:

  • high expectations of what our students can achieve.
  • firm and fair discipline
  • a positive ethos
  • the celebration of student achievement.

Serving the students to the best of their ability, the team strives for:

  • mutual support and respect
  • teamwork and collaboration
  • CPD for all
  • challenging lessons.

Curriculum

We take huge pride in the curriculum we have built, but also understand it is an ever evolving piece of work. All our planning is underpinned by threshold concepts designed to teach students the fundamentals of our subject. We aim to ensure our KS3 provides a strong foundation for their studies at KS4.

At GCSE the department study GCSE Food & Nutrition and GCSE Design & Technology. Notably, teachers take the same approach to teaching Key Stage 4 as to teaching younger students by creating structured lessons that build confidence and independence whilst fostering a passion for our subject.

We use booklets to deliver our lessons at KS3 and KS4. These are booklets we have developed as a team to provide students with high quality resources, inspiring them to take pride in their work and strive for success in their learning. These booklets provide all staff and students with a clear and consistent learning pathway, making our sequencing and learning transparent for all. They also allow staff to spend their time considering the enactment of the curriculum, ensuring time is spent on high quality planning which promotes student talk, checking for understanding and effective scaffolding.

The team is looking forward to welcoming the successful applicant into the department
