At Hertswood Academy, our motto is Aim High, Achieve Excellence. We are a vibrant and supportive educational community dedicated to creating an environment where every student is inspired to reach their full potential, adopt healthy lifestyles, and thrive both academically and personally.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, passionate, and dedicated Female Teacher of PE to join our team on a full-time, maternity cover basis. In this role, you will plan, deliver, and assess a dynamic Physical Education curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 (where applicable). You will play a pivotal role in motivating students, running extra-curricular sports clubs, leading teams in fixtures and competitions, and supporting student wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan and teach well-structured PE lessons across practical and theoretical components following the school’s curriculum schemes of work.

Directly supervise female student changing facilities before, during, and after lessons and activities to ensure safety, privacy, and safeguarding.

Lead, organize, and accompany female sports teams in extra-curricular clubs, fixtures, tournaments, and competitions.

Assess, monitor, and report on student progress and practical performance.

Adapt physical activities to meet the needs, strengths, medical requirements, and physical abilities of all pupils (including SEND).

Perform form tutor duties, delivering PSHE education, digital literacy, and pastoral care.

Person Specification & Requirements

Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or a related discipline. Coaching qualifications in key sports are desirable.

Knowledge & Experience: Strong command of the PE National Curriculum, practical and theoretical PE teaching strategies, sports health, and risk assessment procedures.

Skills: Excellent behaviour management, communication, and ICT tracking skills, alongside the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.

Personal Qualities: High expectations for engagement and sportsmanship, strong organizational skills under pressure, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding.

Equality Act 2010 Exemption Notice: There is a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) for the postholder to be female under Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010. This is necessary due to the requirement for direct supervision of female students in changing rooms, assisting with sportswear adjustments, and accompanying female sports teams to off-site fixtures.

Why Join Us?

Join a supportive department focused on staff development and continuous professional training.

Make a direct impact on young people’s physical literacy, health, and lifelong love for sport.

Work in modern facilities within a school committed to equality, diversity, and student welfare.
