Interview Date: 2nd October 2026

Unity Education Trust are recruiting for a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join our team at Kings Oak Academy as soon as possible, supporting a deaf pupil on a 1:1 basis.

We are seeking a versatile, resilient, and committed individual with experience or interest in supporting children with Special Educational Needs, particularly those who are deaf or have hearing impairments. The successful candidate will work closely with the class teacher and wider staff team to support the pupil’s learning, communication, and social development.

The role will involve using clear communication strategies, which may include visual supports, gestures, and/or British Sign Language (BSL), to ensure the pupil can fully access learning and feel included in all aspects of school life.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide 1:1 support tailored to the needs of a deaf pupil

Support communication using appropriate strategies (e.g. BSL, visual cues, clear speech, and gestures)

Assist with access to learning activities and classroom participation

Promote inclusion, independence, and confidence

Support positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing

Build strong, trusting relationships with the pupil, acting as a positive role model

Work collaboratively with teachers, parents/carers, and external professionals

What We Are Looking For:

Experience supporting children with SEND (experience with deaf pupils desirable but not essential)

Awareness or willingness to learn communication approaches for deaf children (e.g. BSL)

Patient, adaptable, and proactive approach

Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to inclusion

Ability to respond calmly and effectively to individual needs

Please note that the role may involve some physical activity, including supporting intimate care, engaging with pupils in play (including floor-based activities), and responding promptly to escalated situations. This does not remove our obligation to make reasonable adjustments where appropriate.

Kings Oak Academy is part of Unity Education Trust, providing education for children across Norfolk, including mainstream, specialist provision, SEND, and complex needs settings. By joining our Trust, you will become part of a supportive and ambitious family of schools dedicated to helping every child thrive.
