Teaching Assistant (SEND Support) – 4 Days per Week

St Mary's Church of England Primary School · Godalming · Surrey

Job description

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? Do you believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, feel valued and achieve success in a supportive and inclusive environment?

St Mary's C of E Primary School is seeking a caring, patient and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to join our friendly and dedicated team for 4 days per week. This role will primarily involve supporting pupils with SEND within a Key Stage 2 classroom, although there may be opportunities to work alongside children in other classes as required.

About Us

St Mary's is a warm, welcoming and inclusive Church of England primary school at the heart of the Chiddingfold community. We are proud of our wonderful children, whose energy, curiosity and enthusiasm make our school a vibrant and rewarding place to work. Our staff team is supportive, collaborative and committed to ensuring that every child is known, valued and encouraged to reach their full potential.

The Role

You will work closely with class teachers and the SENDCo to support pupils with SEND to access learning successfully within the classroom environment. You will play a vital role in helping children develop confidence, independence and positive relationships, whilst ensuring that their individual needs are met in line with their EHCP outcomes and support plans.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Supporting children to regulate their emotions and behaviour using agreed strategies.
  • Providing sensory breaks, movement breaks and time-out opportunities where appropriate.
  • Adapting learning activities and resources to enable children with SEND to access the curriculum alongside their peers.
  • Encouraging inclusion and participation in all aspects of school life.
  • Working proactively under the direction of the SENDCo and class teacher to ensure children receive the support they need.
  • Supporting pupils across the school when required.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has a genuine commitment to supporting children with SEND.
  • Is skilled at building positive and nurturing relationships with children.
  • Demonstrates patience, empathy and understanding in abundance.
  • Remains calm, resilient and solution-focused when situations become challenging.
  • Understands the importance of inclusive practice and enabling every child to succeed.
  • Can use their initiative and respond proactively to children's needs.
  • Is a strong team player who works effectively with colleagues and families.
  • Is willing to take the time to get to know children, understand their strengths and challenges, and meet them where they are.
  • Minimum English and Maths GCSE

Previous experience of supporting children with SEND, including those with EHCPs, would be advantageous, although the right personal qualities and a willingness to learn are equally important.

We Can Offer:

  • A welcoming and supportive staff team.
  • Delightful, enthusiastic children who make every day rewarding.
  • Opportunities for professional development and training.
  • A school community that values inclusion, collaboration and wellbeing.
  • The chance to make a meaningful difference to children's lives every day.
  • Local Government Pension Scheme and Viveup Employee Assistance Programme

If you are passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning and want to be part of a caring and dedicated school community, we would love to hear from you.

We reserve the right to withdraw this vacancy before the closing date if a suitable candidate is appointed.

St Mary's C of E Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate safeguarding checks, including an enhanced DBS check.
