The Astley Cooper School · Hemel Hempstead · Hertfordshire

Job description

Join The Astley Cooper School and help create a safe, welcoming environment for our students and staff

Are you practical, reliable and take pride in creating a safe, well-maintained environment? Do you enjoy being part of a busy school community where every day is different?

The Astley Cooper School is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Caretaker to join our established site team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who takes pride in their work and enjoys being part of a team that plays an important role in the smooth running of the school. You will help ensure that our buildings, grounds and facilities are safe, secure, clean and welcoming for our students, staff and visitors.

We are looking for someone who is hands-on, proactive and dependable, with a positive approach and a willingness to get involved. You will be someone who takes pride in maintaining high standards and who understands the important contribution a school site team makes to the wider school community.

About The Astley Cooper School

The Astley Cooper School is an increasingly popular and oversubscribed secondary school in Hemel Hempstead. We are proud of our diverse school community and are committed to providing the very best opportunities for every student and member of staff.

Situated on the edge of Hemel Hempstead, the school benefits from excellent transport links, with easy access to the M1 and M25 as well as the local train station.

We are continuing to build a strong culture of success, with high expectations for all our students. Our aim is that every young person leaves us as a successful, well-rounded and confident individual, ready to take their next steps and succeed in the modern world.

Our site team plays a vital role in supporting this vision by providing a safe, secure and positive environment in which students and staff can thrive.

The successful candidate will

  • Have a practical, hands-on approach and take pride in maintaining high standards.
  • Be reliable, organised and able to work independently.
  • Have good practical and problem-solving skills.
  • Be proactive and able to identify and respond to maintenance and site issues.
  • Have a positive and flexible approach to their work.
  • Be confident working as part of a busy school site team.
  • Have good communication skills and be able to build positive relationships with staff, students, contractors and visitors.
  • Understand the importance of health and safety and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Be willing to support the wider needs of the school and contribute positively to our community.

Previous experience in a caretaking, maintenance, facilities or similar role would be advantageous. However, we are also interested in candidates who have strong practical skills, a positive attitude and a genuine desire to make a difference within a school environment.

What we can offer you

At The Astley Cooper School, we recognise that our staff are central to our success. We are committed to supporting colleagues to develop professionally and personally, and offer:

  • A competitive salary
  • Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme

  • Vivup - a Hertfordshire County Council cashback scheme
  • A comprehensive CPD programme for all colleagues
  • A supportive and welcoming school community
  • The opportunity to play an important role in the day-to-day life of our school
  • A varied role where no two days are necessarily the same
