Caretaker

Fairmeadows Foundation Primary School · Swadlincote · Derbyshire

Job description

Are you someone who enjoys solving problems, takes pride in maintaining high standards, and wants to be part of a school where your contribution is genuinely valued?

We're looking for a proactive and dependable Caretaker to join a thriving school. This is much more than a site maintenance role—it's an opportunity to become an integral part of a team that creates a safe, welcoming and inspiring environment where children can learn, grow and succeed.

Whether you're an experienced caretaker or looking to develop your career in site and facilities management, you'll have the opportunity to broaden your skills, take ownership of your work and grow within a supportive organisation

The Role

You'll play a key role in ensuring our school remains a safe, secure and well-maintained environment for pupils, staff and visitors.

Premises and Facilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance, repairs and general DIY tasks
  • Ensure the school buildings and grounds are safe, clean and well presented
  • Coordinate contractors and oversee maintenance work on site
  • Manage deliveries and maintain stock of essential site supplies
  • Act as a key holder, including responding to alarm call-outs when required
  • Support ongoing improvements to the school environment

Health and Safety

  • Conduct routine site inspections and risk assessments
  • Maintain accurate health and safety records
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and school policies
  • Promote a culture of safety and wellbeing across the school

Who We're Looking For

We're seeking someone who is practical, reliable and enjoys taking ownership of their work.

Essential

  • Experience in building maintenance, caretaking or a hands-on maintenance role
  • Good knowledge of health and safety practices
  • Strong DIY and practical problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise workloads
  • Full UK Driving Licence

You'll Also Be...

  • Organised and proactive
  • Trustworthy and dependable
  • Friendly and approachable
  • Proud of delivering high standards
  • Committed to creating a positive environment for children and staff

Hours of work

  • Split Shift: 6.00am – 10.00am and 2.30pm – 6.00pm (37.5 per week)
  • 25 days holiday (only to be taken during school closures) per year plus bank holidays

Develop Your Career With Us

We're committed to helping our staff grow and succeed.

As part of our team, you'll have access to:

  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Health & Safety and compliance qualifications
  • Opportunities to develop specialist skills in facilities and site management
  • A supportive leadership team that encourages continuous learning and progression

Why This Role Matters

The school environment has a direct impact on every child's experience. Your work will help create a safe, welcoming and inspiring place where pupils can thrive, teachers can focus on delivering outstanding education, and families feel proud to be part of the school community.

Every repair completed, every improvement made and every safety check carried out contributes to creating an environment where children can achieve their very best.
